God faced a great dilemma: how could he save from eternal doom the human beings he specifically created to enjoy a mutual relationship of love and friendship and for whom he yearns whilst upholding two truths about their sin of rebellion?1 Peter Chapter 3 vs 18

  • Sin is deadly serious and cannot be condoned because it is destructive to all created life.
  • It is imperative that sin must be forsaken and a return made to embrace his design for life.
  • God did not leave us to our deserved fate but instead resolved this dilemma to his great cost in sending his divine son into the world to become a man. That man is Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus proved himself to be the perfect human being. In contrast to us, Jesus always lived under God’s authority. He proclaimed the kingdom of God had come and showed in himself the quality of that kingdom-life as its King. He was tested in every area of human life and never rebelled against God. He fully complied with God’s commands and thus could not come under condemnation. God did not judge him worthy of punishment or death; yet Jesus did die — cruelly on a cross. This seems strange; for during his life Jesus exercised the power of God to overthrow every power of evil; he healed all kinds of sickness, he manifested all manner of miracles and even raised people from death. He obviously had the power to overcome those who wanted to see him crucified; yet he chose not to use it. The truth is that he permitted evil people to execute him on a cross.

We must ask: Why?
